FAIR DEBT COLLECTION PRACTICES ACT

Getting calls or letters from a debt collector? Debt collection letters have to give you certain information about your debt and your ability to dispute it. Debt collectors who call you have to follow the rules too.

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act protects you from debt collectors who do not follow the law. If your debt collector is behaving badly then click here to learn more about the FDCPA

ILLEGAL DEBT COLLECTION PRACTICES

You get a call or a letter from a debt collector. What are they talking about, where did this debt come from? Why are they calling me? How did they get my address? Can they really call my work?

Debt collectors can cause real pain. Often they use illegal threats, collect bad debts, contact the wrong people, tell people they shouldn’t about your debts, and fail to tell you about your right to dispute a debt. Congress even put in the law that illegal debt collection practices lead to bankruptcies, marital instability, job loss, and invasions of privacy.
